Rainbow Book List

Rainbow Books on the ALSC Blog

Posted by: lvs2read on: April 11, 2011

On Saturday (April 9th), we were featured on the ALSC Blog, enlightening their readers on what it is the committee does and trying to fight the misconceptions on what Rainbow Books mean.  ALSC, for those of you who may not know, stands for Association of Library Services to Children, and they as a group focus on creating a better future for children through libraries.  These are the people in and around the American Librarian Association who are the children or youth librarians, children’s literature experts, publishers, etc. who focus on those who are (depending on where you work and where the dividing line is where you are) either 14 and under or 12 and under.

These are your probable story time performers, your craft time do-ers, your summer reading club backbones.

These are the Tamaras from Unshelved.

These are the people who are defending And Tango Makes Three, It’s a Book, Daddy’s Wedding, Dogs Don’t Do Ballet, 10,000 Dresses, and a host of other books from reconsideration.

These are the people who choose the Newbery, Caldecott, Sibert, Wilder, Carnegie, Batchelder, Belpré, Geisel, and Odyssey awards and the May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture, and this past year the Stonewall Youth awards were invited to share the podium for the first time at the Youth Media Awards at ALA Midwinter in San Diego.

More information about ALSC can be found here.
