Facebook has recently cracked down on violations of its policy that users display only their real, legal names on their profiles. The site has been banning users and removing profiles for failing to comply with the policy. This move has sparked protest from drag queens and other performers, who argue that the chosen names under which they perform are an important part of their identities and livelihoods.
There has been one positive development in the conflict as of yesterday, however: Facebook representatives have agreed to meet with Sister Roma of San Francisco’s Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, as well as a few others, to discuss the matter. At the meeting, Facebook held firm, stating that personal profiles on their site must have a person’s real name on them. The drag queens and other performers have vowed to continue protesting the change.
